A Great Place to Live and Study

Launceston Grammar is located in northern Tasmania in the City of Launceston. Voted Australia’s most family-friendly city, Launceston is renowned as a warm and welcoming city with a diverse, multicultural population of just under 72,000 people.

One of Australia’s oldest cities, Launceston was founded in 1806 and has one of the best-preserved early cityscapes in Australia and century-old parks and gardens, excellent restaurants and cafés, and popular cultural and sporting precincts. It is a safe and easy place to get around, with many areas accessible by walking.

Travelling to Launceston

Launceston is a regional city. When arriving from another country, your child will first land in one of Australia's international airports such as Sydney or Melbourne. Here they will collect their luggage before boarding a short (45-90 minutes) domestic flight on to Launceston. By arrangement, we offer a chaperone service whereby a staff member can meet your child and transfer on to domestic services.

'We Call It Launnie'

Launceston City Council have made a video that is a great introduction to Launceston and its way of life.

Watch it here for more about what life is like in 'Launnie'.

Launceston Grammar values the breadth of cultural experience that international students bring to the School. We are keen to continue the growing number of international students who, during their time at Launceston Grammar, have achieved both academic success and personal growth.

International students have access to our diverse academic programs, with an extensive number of subjects offered in the TCE (Tasmanian Certificate of Education). Many exciting co-curricular activities are available, from music to art, tennis, soccer, table tennis and much more.

International Student Enrolment Process

Applications from International Students are assessed and considered on the basis of:

  • the number of positions available at the appropriate grade level
  • the resources of the School
  • the student’s academic records
  • evidence that the student's English language proficiency is at an appropriate level for the proposed course of study

International students require an adequate command of English so that they can manage the curriculum in mainstream classes. Launceston Grammar requires evidence of a student’s sufficient proficiency in English to successfully achieve the curriculum demands of the enrolled course upon commencement.

Examples of appropriate English proficiency evidence include:

  • AEAS report stanines of 6 or above in non-verbal ability and mathematics reasoning ability
  • attaining or exceeding the relevant level required for the grade of entry on a report from an approved ELICOS provider
  • demonstrated English language proficiency during an enrolment interview with Launceston Grammar
  • a student having been enrolled at an overseas School in which all subjects have been delivered in English for the past 3+ years
  • other relevant reports / assessments as requested

Students may be required to undertake intensive English language study prior to their entry to mainstream study. Launceston Grammar can assist with the process of studying with an approved ELICOS provider.

Launceston Grammar students study in mainstream English classes and receive limited ESL (English as a Second Language) tuition from a specialist teacher who works with individuals or small groups on specific needs.

Please contact our Enrolments Office at enrolments@lcgs.tas.edu.au to receive an Application for Enrolment form.

It is important to note that lodgement of the Application for Enrolment form is not an Offer of Enrolment or notice of acceptance.

Launceston Grammar will assess the application including evaluation of reports and of English Language proficiency. The Director of Learning will make the final decision on the acceptance of students to the School.

The enrolment process will commence with a Letter of Offer of place made in writing by the Principal, accompanied by a fee invoice.

Acceptance of Enrolment is made by completion of the relevant forms and payment of the Enrolment Confirmation Fee, one half year’s tuition and fees plus boarding fees for the same period.

Upon receipt of the Acceptance of Enrolment and payment, an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment certificate (eCoE) will be issued for application of Student Visa 500.

Full information regarding enrolment, conditions and policies, please refer to the International Student Arrival Handbook.
