Middle Grammar (Gr 7-9)

Middle Grammar

At Launceston Grammar an enriching learning environment is underpinned by engaging and challenging opportunities. The curriculum is explored in a supportive environment where there is the opportunity for lively debate, development of the values of good character and the formation of well-developed understandings and views on local, national and international challenges.

The six years of secondary education at Launceston Grammar can be understood as two modules: MG7 and Grades 8-9, and Grammar Graduates (Grades 10-12).

MG7 - Middle Grammar 7

At Launceston Grammar, we recognise that the transition from the primary years into the older grades can be a challenging one for your child. Our Grade 7 team are therefore equipped to nurture and inspire their students as they begin their high school learning journey, and the curriculum ensures there is enough challenge to help them grow.

Your Grade 7 child will benefit from the stability of having one core teacher for the majority of their subjects, who is responsible for their overall welfare and who ensures each child is known, heard and understood. The welcoming and nurturing environment of the dedicated Grade 7 learning zone, known as the Log Cabins, gently transitions students to the wider experiences of the Senior Campus, which will then continue in Grade 8 and beyond.

Our Grade 7 cohort is generally made up of both students advancing from our Junior Campus, and students joining Grammar from other schools, at an approximate 50:50 ratio. Outdoor education experiences are formative in establishing a cohort’s bonds, and to this end, your Grade 7 child will head off on their first camp right at the start of the year. This three-night adventure gives staff and students the opportunity to get to know each other in the beautiful setting of the Fingal Valley.

Towards the end of their Grade 7 year, your child will embark upon one of Grammar’s signature outdoor education experiences – the Maria Island Camp. Now running for over 60 years, this hallmark of Grade 7 sees the whole cohort and their teachers, supported by a number of parent helpers, spend seven days on this beautiful island in southern Tasmania, and continues to be a Senior Campus highlight for many students.

Grades 8-9

In Grade 8 your child will make the transition from the Log Cabins and become integrated into the School’s House system. They will join a tutor group made up of students in the same House from Grades 8-12, led by a teacher with pastoral responsibility for the group who stays with them for the remainder of their time at the Senior Campus.

In the classroom, Grade 8 students study a range of subjects, some of which form the core of their academic program. As well as this, Grade 8 provides students with a wide choice of electives from which to choose, as they begin to delve more deeply into subjects that particularly challenge and inspire them. Options include drama, philosophy, technology, agriculture, aviation, and graphics and design. During the year, your child will once again benefit from the expertise of our excellent outdoor education team, as they embark on a camp to the Freycinet Peninsula.

Grade 9 marks the middle year of your child’s time on the Senior Campus and once again they will be able to make selections from a wide range of elective subjects over the two semesters as they continue to extend subjects studied in Grade 8. The Grade 9 program maintains essential themes including literacy, numeracy and understanding and awareness of one's place in a changing world. Elective subjects might include such diverse areas as Chinese, food studies, robotics and coding, sports science, and music. The Grade 9 outdoor education experience for happens right at the end of the year at Mount Cameron in the state's northeast, and is often cited by students as one of the highlights of their time at Grammar.
