Launceston Church Grammar School (the School) is an Anglican co-educational day and boarding community in northern Tasmania. Known for educational excellence and a strong, values-based community, we provide rich learning and co-curricular experiences for students from Early Learning to Year 12.
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Learning Area Leader (LAL) – Science to provide strategic and operational leadership to our Science department. This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding educator to lead curriculum development, support and develop staff, drive student outcomes and contribute to the School’s broader educational direction.
This is a permanent, full-time 1.0 FTE teaching position, with an additional five-year leadership responsibility, commencing Term 1, 2027.
As a key member of the School’s middle leadership team, the Learning Area Leader – Science will build on the strong foundations of the department and help shape the future of Science education at Launceston Grammar.
About the role
The Learning Area Leader – Science provides leadership and direction across the Science department, ensuring high standards of teaching, learning, curriculum delivery and student outcomes.
Working collaboratively with the Director of Learning and other members of the leadership team, you will provide leadership to teachers and laboratory assistants, oversee curriculum and assessment planning, support professional growth and ensure the department aligns with the School’s strategic priorities and educational vision.
As part of this role, you will be required to:
- Lead and be accountable for the effective operation and activities of the Science department.
- Provide strategic and operational direction for the department in alignment with the School’s vision and strategic priorities.
- Lead curriculum planning, development and innovation across Science.
- Ensure curriculum, assessment and moderation practices meet relevant ACARA and TCE requirements.
- Monitor assessment data and student outcomes to support continuous improvement.
- Promote academic excellence and the holistic development and wellbeing of students.
- Lead, mentor and support department staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
- Provide line management to department staff, including supporting recruitment, induction, probation and performance appraisal processes.
- Identify and support professional learning opportunities aligned with School priorities, individual development goals and the AITSL Standards.
- Model exemplary teaching practice and contemporary approaches to curriculum and pedagogy.
- Maintain current knowledge of national and international developments and emerging trends in Science education.
- Encourage innovation and the development of new curriculum opportunities, teaching strategies and technologies.
- Manage departmental priorities and budgets in consultation with relevant members of the School leadership team.
- Represent the School and Science department on relevant internal and external committees and organisations.
- Contribute to the School’s co-curricular program, House activities, staff meetings and broader community events.
- Actively contribute to the School’s culture, values and commitment to student wellbeing.

Qualifications & Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education or a relevant tertiary qualification.
- Current Teacher Registration with the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board.
- Current Working with Vulnerable People Registration (WWVP).
- Current HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.
- Demonstrated leadership experience or capacity to lead and develop teams.
- Demonstrated expertise in curriculum and pedagogical design and exemplary teaching practice.
- Thorough understanding of contemporary student welfare and wellbeing practices.
- Demonstrated experience in developing, promoting and implementing innovative educational initiatives.
- Contemporary approach to curriculum development, with evidence of innovation and strong student outcomes.
- Proactive interest in emerging educational strategies and technologies.
