At the conclusion of the longest term of the year, we have much to look back on and celebrate.  A long, wet winter has brought much needed relief to our farming families, so much so, that occasionally I would hear the unthinkable “we’ve almost had too much!” Even Netball at Hobblers Bridge was cancelled on two occasions. However, inclement weather can lead to ‘classroom fever’ as play times are disrupted, and playgrounds closed. I commend our students and staff for persevering despite the constant wave of winter illness.

The Arts

Term 3 is a time when our co-curricular activities are in full swing. The Arts programs have provided an opportunity for many students to excel. Our students have created, attended and even curated exhibitions. When I see the creativity of our students, it has made me firm in resolve to be Tasmania’s leading STEAM school. The process of imagining, creating and evolving our thinking through the Visual Arts is palpable. In early Term 4 there will be student exhibitions on both campuses, and having had a sneak preview, I can assure you the quality of work is exceptional.

Our performing artists have excelled in their endeavours. The Spring Concert was a wonderful evening of cross campus performances masterminded by our Acting Head of Performing Arts, Dr Melissa Rogers and her dedicated staff.  Our expressive string and concert bands, lyrical choirs, polished ensembles and passionate soloists delivered a dynamic range of music genres. The Grade 5 ‘The Lion King Kids’ was a roaring success! The costumes and makeup were amazing, and the students kept the audience enthralled (and toe tapping). It was fitting that at the final performance, Mrs Carter announced the retirement of our Junior Campus Music Teacher, Mr Mark Saunders. Mark’s contribution to the success of our Junior Campus music program has been outstanding – taking part in no less than 45 musicals since he commenced at Grammar in 1992. It is also important to remember he was Head of Junior Campus from May 2009 – Dec 2012. He has been a great servant of the school.

Sports

On the sporting fields and courts, our students have pushed themselves as individuals and successful teams. Our Head of Sporting Programs, Mr Craig Slavin has provided a comprehensive review of the winter sports program which can be found in the Senior Campus report below. We had numerous teams make northern finals. Our Open Girls Soccer play the state final Week 1 Term 4 and we wish them well as the third consecutive team to reach this stage of the competition in as many years.

I extend my thanks, on behalf of students and their families, to those staff who participate in the co-curricular activities program and enable us to achieve our provision of a quality well-rounded education. It is through their contribution that we can continue to provide a comprehensive educational offering, and opportunity remains the catch cry that distinguishes a Grammar education.

Term 3 in Review

Over the term, there have been many opportunities to celebrate our students and plan their next steps together, as we begin to prepare for 2025. Our students have continued to be a part of the wider community be it through service partnerships or activities such as the Red Meat Updates, Object Design Exhibition at UTAS, Art Start at QVMAG, the String Quartet visiting at the Launceston General Hospital and many more opportunities.  It was wonderful to come together to celebrate the inaugural Grammar Graze – an opportunity for community to come together it was a Tasmanian epicurean delight! Thank you to our Director of Advancement, Kate Dean, and team for a brilliant event.

This term, we have also hosted the Registration Review by the Office of Education Registrar.  A considerable amount of work and time goes into such processes, and I am indebted to members of the Senior Leadership and curriculum leaders for their expansive work.  My EA, Elysa Oliver-Bennett has worked assiduously to keep track of the over 15,000 pages of documentation.  We have received favourable feedback relating to our uplift in policy and process, our planning and cohesion as ‘One School’, and our commitment and demonstrable actions to promote the whole of school Wellbeing and Student Safety. We will have our final report by years end.

Term 3 is also a time when staff indicate their future intentions. Our community is aware of the decision by Reverend and Mrs Pickering to conclude their time at Grammar as they move to retirement on the South Coast of NSW. Their presence and contribution to the school, specifically the Chaplaincy and pastoral care program, has been significant and they will be missed. Mr Mark Cox, our highly regarded Head of Science and former Dean of Students, is also retiring at years’ end. Mark’s contribution to the academic, pastoral and spiritual life of the school has been exemplary and we thank him for his service.

Last week on the Junior Campus, we bid a fond farewell to Sheona Carter. She has led the campus with quite confidence over the last 3 years ensuring that the staff have been well supported in the provision of a first-rate learning program. The successful accreditation of the IB PYP and the subsequent evolution in its cohesion and effectiveness is testament to Sheona’s wise educational leadership. We wish her well as she returns to family and especially the role of grandmother, which she relishes. However, I know it won’t be long before Sheona commences another exciting undertaking in her highly successful career.

Staffing Updates

During the term I have made two senior leadership staffing appointments which will greatly assist the School to meet our strategic goals. The appointment of Mr Luke Padgett to the role of Head of a Junior Campus has been well received and we look forward to him commencing the role in 2025. His professionalism and commitment to excellence in education will see him lead our Junior Campus community with confidence. Mr Patrick Coleman will also be joining us in 2025 in the newly created role of Director of Learning (P -12). Patrick is known to many of our community as a former staff member, current parent and more broadly as an experienced leader in education having most recently been District Principal (TAS/VIC) for One School Global and more recently as Manager – Project, Policies and Communication with DECYP.

Looking Ahead

The term break is an opportunity to recharge before the final nine weeks of the year during which the whole school is a hive of learning activities and celebrations. For our Grade 12s, there remains three weeks before their time concludes. They have been impressive in their cohesion and initiative, leading the student body with enthusiasm, through the provision of both old and new activities, and inclusion. Grade 11 and 12 students have been well prepared for their examinations and will no doubt finish well.

Enrolments for 2025 are very positive, with enrolments growing particularly in ‘Little Grammar’ (Early Learning – Grade 2). Pleasingly, we will commence 2025 with two Preparatory classes and a near full Early Learning program, with six classes. Our other entry points at Grades 5, 7 and 10 are near capacity. Hawkes Boarding continues to grow steadily. It is heartening to see the return of international students from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. The cultural diversity and inclusion in the student population contributes to the School’s success. We embrace difference and celebrate that we are a compassionate and strong community.

I look forward to seeing you in the final term. In the meantime, enjoy the opportunity to be with family over the break, stay safe and enjoy the beauty that is spring in Tasmania.

Term 3 has been another exciting and eventful term, with much happening for children and families within and beyond the Junior Campus.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) have been conducted in Digital Tech, English Mathematics, Spelling, Writing and Science this term. Congratulations to all who entered one or several of the competitions and thanks to our Primary Years Programme Coordinator (PYPC), Claire Calvert, for ensuring that all went smoothly during the tests.

Grade 5 Musical – Lion King Kids

Grade 5 Junior Musical, ‘The Lion King Kids’ was performed last week. There were 2 matinees and 2 evening performances. All agreed it was a hit and one of the best – ever! Congratulations and thanks to all our committed staff, especially Mark Saunders, Adam Brooks, Sophie Gunn and Sarah Williams. The season of Lion King Kids could not have been the success it was without the help of our loyal parent community, Pearl Chinthammit, Lee Larter, Anita Kidd and Fiona Fanning in particular. Fabulous artwork inspired, by Martine Cook and Janette Bowles, complemented the creative back drops and sets.

House Public Speaking

Students from Grades 3-6 all participated in the annual House Public Speaking Competition. Throughout the competition, students learnt how to craft and deliver engaging speeches about wellbeing related topics and topics that are important to them. This event was a huge success – thanks to our Primary Years Programme Coordinator (PYPC) Claire Calvert and all the staff

Tournament of Minds (TOM) success!

Fourteen of our Junior Campus students from Grades Three to Six participated in the state Tournament of Minds (TOM) competition in Hobart recently. The children were given six weeks to solve a complex challenge from their chosen discipline. They had 10 minutes to present their solution in an engaging, creative and original way to a panel of judges and an audience. Teams were also given a spontaneous challenge to solve requiring collaboration, creativity and problem-solving skills. TOM preparation takes considerable time both during and out of school hours and all children are to be commended on their incredible commitment.

Our Social Sciences Primary team earned an Honourable Mention in their division and the Primary Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) team took out first place. Both teams performed brilliantly in both the spontaneous and long-term challenge and can be very proud of their achievements. The smiles and sense of achievement on their faces afterwards said it all. Junior Campus students enjoyed watching the competitors when they shared their presentations.

As winners of their discipline, our STEM team have been invited to represent Tasmania at the International Tournament of Minds final in Sydney in late October.

Best of luck team!!!!  Go Grammar!!!

Mathematics Competitions

30 students from Grades 3-6 participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition in August with very pleasing results.

51 Students from Grades 3-6 participated in the Australian Maths Olympiad (G5/G6) and Maths Explorer Contests (G3/G4). Four contests were held across Terms 2 & 3 with students showing increased confidence and mastery as the competition progressed. Congratulations and sincere thanks to Learning Enrichment Teacher, and TOM leader, Lauren Thompson, and congratulations to all our participants!

There has been lots happening in PE and Sport. Sincere thanks to PE/Sport Teachers, Christian Zantuck and Nicole Prewer, and all out teachers and parent helpers for supporting the programs at school and beyond. The children have had many and varied opportunities to engage and compete.

Tasmanian All Schools, NIJSSA and Winter Cross Country Series

Our school has celebrated many fine cross-country performances from our junior athletes at the State All Schools Cross Country Titles, NIJSSA Carnival and Newstead Athletics Club Winter Cross Country Series. A team of 25 students ran for the school at Symmons Plains, with 48 students representing the school at the NIJSSA event, recording 3rd place overall out of 9 schools. We also had a healthy continent of runners who competed each Saturday with some winning their category overall or placing in each event.

Zoe M had a top 10 finish in the State titles, top 3 finish in her NIJSSA event and won her category in the Winter Series, congratulations Zoe!

Freddie G won his category, with Max M second with both boys also combining for the teams event with Thayu M , Griffin H and C, finishing third overall. Congratulations to all!

National Cross-Country Titles

On Saturday 31 August, two students from the Junior Campus represented Tasmania at the National Cross Country Championships at Symmons Plains. This effort was based on their exceptional results at the State Titles in June. Laura C and Toby F ran alongside the best runners in the nation and performed very well in tough conditions, with Laura placing 24th in her 3km event and Toby 35th in his 3km event. Congratulations to both students!

House Athletics Carnival

A wonderful day of colour and House spirit at our Grade 3 to 6 Athletics Carnival at St Leonards Athletic Centre. Thank you to all parents, staff and students for supporting our magical day. Our Kindergarten to Grade 2 students also spent some time on the track.

Overall House Results

First: Maxey-Middleton (MM) Second: Lyttleton-Hewton (LH) Third: Buesnell-Rooney (BR).

Grade 6 Boys Champion – Toby F (MM)

Grade 6 Boys Runner-Up – Maxwell W (LH)

Grade 6 Girls Champion – Sebla R(MM)

Grade 6 Girls Runner-Up – Ruby B (MM

A team of 54 athletes have now also been selected to represent the school at the NIJSSA Athletics Carnival in Term 4.

Congratulations to all competitors and sincere thanks again to our PE and Sport Teacher, Christian Zantuck, all our parent helpers and staff, for supporting our young athletes. It was a great day!

State Futsal Titles

On Tuesday 10 September, our Boys U12 Futsal team headed to the State ‘Champion of Champions’ Futsal Titles in Hobart for a day of competition. This invitation came after the Grammar team won the Northern Title earlier in the year. After 3 exciting matches, the team made it to the third-place playoff against Lauderdale Primary School. In a thrilling match, Kruze S and Tommy C scored early, and with the score tied 2-2, Toby F found the net to lead 3-2! But with just 30 seconds left, Lauderdale equalised, ending in an epic 3-3 Draw. Special mention to Ezrah P for his goals in the previous matches and Will A with an incredible 30 saves across the tournament! We’re so proud of the boys’ efforts and resilience. Well done, Grammar!

Learning Beyond the Classroom

To further learning beyond the classroom, Grade 4 students attended Camp at Camp Clayton – thanks to Janette, Bowles, Adam Brooks, Catherine Langley and Helen Wilson for looking after the students. All had a great time.

Grade 5 have been to Hillwood Berry Farm, Prep went to the Tasmania Zoo and Grade 6 students attended the Senior Campus House singing – reportedly a wonderful transition experience!

Daily PE has commenced under the guidance of Junior Campus Wellbeing Coordinator, Adam Brooks and staff. Student leaders host various House activities to ensure the students start the day energised.

Chess Club continues, with a weekend Tournament recently held in Faulkner Hall.

Community Events

There have been many opportunities for the community to come together. Our Junior Campus Fathers’ Day Breakfast was well attended by members of the community. Dads and children, as well as all our visitors, had a delicious breakfast together to start the day. The Grammar Spring Concert was a great success, with Junior and Senior musicians performing together. Those in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the performances and were amazed with the range of talent. Congratulations to all staff and musicians for presenting such a wonderful night of music.

The recent Grammar Graze was enjoyed by all in attendance – thanks and congratulations to Kate Dean and the Advancement Team for organising such a memorable event.

Staffing

After 33 years at Grammar, Music teacher, Mark Saunders, has written to advise of his intention to retire from teaching at the end of this year. Quoting the words of Mufasa at the end of the Lion King, Mark has decided, “It is time.” Mark has been a wonderful learner, teacher, leader and mentor over his 33 years at Grammar.

Mark was thanked for his loyal service to Grammar at the final performance of The Lion King Kids. There will be an opportunity to thank him at the end of Term 4. There will be many musicians, and colleagues, who have been inspired by him.

Incoming Head of Junior Campus, Luke Padgett, has been in to visit. Luke is very excited about the opportunity to be Head of the Junior Campus and continue working with the team to further develop what we offer. All are looking forward to welcoming Luke to the Junior Campus and Grammar team.

Staff Learning

Our committed staff continue to extend their pedagogy and practice by engaging in professional development. Our Learning Management System (LMS), myGrammar, enables staff to share learning moments and notices and information are posted on my Grammar to ensure that parents are informed. There is ongoing opportunities for developing our skills and knowledge of myGrammar so we can further improve how we communicate with you.

Staff also regularly re-visit Policies and procedures, most recently Child Safety, Mandatory Reporting and Junior Campus Playground Risk Assessments

Patricia Roberts Precinct

The Early Learning and Kinder (pre-school) precinct is about to undergo renovations. Drawings of the proposed building renovations and landscape plans are on display at the rear of Broadland House. During the holidays, the builders will begin the process of removing the concrete ramps, refurbishing the Hargraves Block and landscaping the play areas. The precinct will have magical indoor learning spaces for our young learners and re-imagined, natural outdoor play areas to explore. A stepped deck will provide flexible space for sitting, playing and performing. The Patricia Roberts Precinct should be ready during 2025.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the festivities that have accompanied my final week of Term 3 at the Junior Campus. The Monday Assembly was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what has been happening at the Campus, with a great mix of fun and festivity. The many and varied contributions reminded us that our school, Launceston Grammar, supports our students to be the best they can, with community engagement being a hallmark. Thanks to all creative presenters who captured everything that is great about our school. Claire Calvert and Georgia Greig spoke beautifully, parents Jo Wadley and Fleur Castle also shared their perspectives. Our students were impressive in their tributes and Principal, Dale Bennett captivated the audience with his enthusiasm and wit. To close, our Chaplain, Martha Parkinson, reminded us of the importance of faith and optimism. Afternoon tea followed in the Art House, beautifully curated by our Art Teacher extraordinaire, Martine Cook. It was lovely to spend time with children, parents and staff in attendance.

All the cards, gifts and kind wishes are greatly appreciated. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to be part of the Junior Campus team that nurtures, challenges and inspires the children entrusted to us.

Grammar is one of the great schools because of its rich history, our connected community and the ever-inspiring students and staff. The future holds much promise. I leave with many cherished memories – Thank you!

So, after an action-packed term, it is time for a well-earned break. We hope that children and families can enjoy life at a different pace over the coming weeks. Best wishes to all for a fulfilling Term 4 to end the year.

Sheona Carter
Head of Junior Campus

As we come to the end of Term 3 it is wonderful to reflect on the many wonderful events of the Term.

House Singing Competition

On Thursday 5 September, the Houses battled it out for the annual singing competition. The standard was fantastic and once again our Grade 6 students joined us and voted for the People’s Choice Award. Gillett House proved too strong taking out both the People’s Choice and overall award. The day was lots of fun.

Launch of 2025 Musical.

Following on from the House Singing, the School Musical for 2025 was announced. Our thespians will be once again at the Princess Theatre and will be presenting Grease the Musical. Our students were then entertained by some student bands that represented the School at the recent Battle of the Bands.

House Futsal Competition.

The houses have been competing at lunchtimes in grade groups as part of a lunchtime league to promote house spirit. The games have been lots of fun and very well supported.

Socials

Our Prefects have done a wonderful job in organising socials for students in Grades 7, 8 and 9.

National Science Week

Over the course of Science Week our Science faculty presented many varied activities that showcased science in its many iterations. This culminated in a science expo for staff and students.

National Book Week

Throughout Book Week there was a different theme each day, from a Cake Competition to a competition to dress like a book character with a BBQ to raise funds for the library on Cape Barron Island. Students from our Junior Campus also joined with Senior Campus students for a book blitz. This saw students working in small groups from 8 am to 5 pm to write a book in a day.

Sherborne

After spending 4 weeks on a reciprocal exchange 4 students from the Sherborne Girls’ School returned home. This exchange has been going for over 10 years and something that we hope to expand to include the Sherborne Boys School moving forward.

SRC/Interact

Our SRC has officially been accepted as a charted group under the auspices of the Rotary Club, The Interact Club of Launceston Church Grammar School (SRC). The SRC provides opportunities for students in grades 7-11 to represent the student body and be a voice for their peers. This year we have incorporated the group into the Interact Club which will provide significant community engagement.

Music Camps

Our senior students were involved in the annual music camp at Camp Clayton. This camp serves to improve camaraderie among the group and allow for prolonged sessions for the students to work on new pieces. Many of these will be showcased at the end on the year celebration activities.

Spring Concert

Our annual Spring Concert was held at the Door of Hope and featured our amazing students from both campuses. I was a joy to hear our students perform. The range of talents is extraordinary and a great credit to the dedication of our staff and students.

Our sporting teams have achieved a great deal of success over the term.

Netball

Saturday Netball finished with 3 of the 9 teams making it through to the NHHSA Grand Finals. Our Senior Girls defeated Newstead College 26-21 with Mackenzie P winning the MVP. Our Junior Mixed Division 2A team defeated Launceston Christian School 17-16 with Jeriah L winning the MVP, and our Junior Mixed Division 2B team going down 19-10 to Prospect High School.

Senior Soccer

All 4 of our senior soccer teams made the finals this season. Our younger 2nds Boys Blue defeated our older 2nds Boys Black 4-1 in the Semi-Final before going down to St Patrick’s College 8-2 in the NSATIS Final. Our 1sts Boys also went down to St Patrick’s College in the NSATIS Final 7-2. Our 1sts Girls went one better, taking out the NSATIS Premiership for the 5th time in a row, defeating Launceston Christian School 6-2. They will now take on Gilford Young College in the State Final first week back next term.

Badminton

Our 1sts were very competitive and were only 1 win away from making the NSATIS Final. Our 2nds played in the NSATIS Final against Scotch Oakburn College in a match that went right down to the wire. The match finished with both teams on 8 wins each and our team narrowly missed out on a premiership by a points count back.

Junior Football

Both the Grade 7/8 Boys’ and Girls’ made the finals this season. The girls were unfortunately knocked out by the weather, not being able to play their semi-final, the higher ranked Brookes High went through to the final. The boys did get to play and demolished the much-fancied St Patrick’s team to make it through to the NHSSA Grand Final against Kings Meadows High School. Our boys dominated the game, but were left lamenting missed opportunities,

Junior Volleyball

2 of our 3 Junior Volleyball Teams played in the semi-finals against St Patrick’s College teams. Our Grammar White team were successful and play in the NSATIS Final (I will update this tomorrow)

Swimming

We had some outstanding individual performances in the pool at the NSATIS Short Course Carnival with many records tumbling. Tilly J set new records in the 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke, Issac C set records in the 50m and 100m Freestyle, Oliver M set a new 50m Breaststroke record and our U15 Girls’ Relay Team also set a new record. Abbie K won all of her events but couldn’t break any of the records that she set last year when she swam up an age group.

The SATIS Swimming Carnival led to more success with Abbie K setting 2 new records in the 50m and 100m Freestyle, helping Grammar win the U16 Girls Age Group Pennant.  In addition to the U16s, the U15 Girls, led by Tilly J, won Grammar our 2nd Age Group Pennant. Notable performances were also given by Issac C and Oliver M who gained 1st places in their events.

Rev Matthew Pickering

As Term 3 comes to an end we farewelled Rev. Matthew Pickering from our School. Matthew has had significant impact on so many areas of the School and he will be missed by staff and students. We wish him every success as he returns to NSW at the end of the year.

Term 4

As our Grade 12 students head off to the term 3 break it seems somewhat surreal that in only 5 weeks’ time their journey at Grammar will be coming to an end. After many years, in some cases over 15, they have been coming to school at Grammar every February, but now that time will be coming to an end. In term 4 we will honour their journey as they take the next step in their life path. We look forward to celebrating with them and their families during Valedictory Week. I wish all our families and happy and safe break.
