Dear Boarding families

I think you can all agree with me in saying where has the time gone! I can’t believe we are already at the end of week 2. It has been an exciting start to the year with many milestone events. I’d like to thank all of you that turned up to the welcome back evening. It was lovely to see so many returning families as well as welcome new students and families to the start of Boarding at Launceston Grammar for 2023. Thank you for entrusting us to care for your child’s wellbeing.

I am also writing to inform you that, starting next Friday the 17th of February, our fortnightly Boarding Newsletter will be integrated into the Parent Newsletter. This is the first step in our aim to grow the face of our Grammar Boarding Community and showcase what our Boarders do to the whole Grammar Community.

I am also excited to announce that we will be posting more regular updates of the day-to-day activities in the Grammar Boarding House on the School’s Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Here we will key showcase activities that the Grammar Boarding House participates in in the wider community. We also invite you to join the ‘Launceston Grammar Boarding’ private Facebook Page where you will see more regular updates on boarding matters that relate to you and your child. If you don’t use any social media, fear not as the information in the fortnightly parent Newsletter will still inform you on all boarding matters.

On the first weekend, we had a large number of boarders stay in the house which made for a fantastic environment with many boarders getting to know each other better and meeting new people. After a rainy Saturday, we were blessed with fantastic weather on Sunday which many of our boarders made the most of through a visit to the cataract gorge. The boarders went for a swim, played spike ball and read books in the lovely sunshine.

We also had our first Hawkes Boarding Formal dinner for the year, which is a very important night for our Boarding Community. We started the evening with Chapel where the message from Reverend Pickering was one of Gratitude. This is a value that we aim to practice this year and we were grateful to have our senior student leadership group present the new boarders with their “Boarder” badges. We were also grateful to have the company of our Principal and his wife, Mr and Mrs Bennet, Mr Nick Foster, Mrs Sheona Carter, Mrs Deenie Campbell, and Reverend Pickering. We would like to thank Mark and his team in the kitchen for setting up the dining hall and providing us with a fantastic meal to ensure we all had a fun and enjoyable evening.  We hope that you enjoy the pictures below.

With week two coming to an end, many of our boarders are in full swing of their sporting commitments, both through school sports and outside-of-school programs. The Boarding house supports these students with their sporting commitments, providing transport to training and competitions. Several of our boarders are currently competing in rowing, soccer, and cricket, while we also have orchestra training.

We are grateful for the positive start to the new year and wanted to show you some of these experiences that are boarders have had thus far. Please feel free to reach out to me (tpieters@lcgs.tas.edu.au, 0447732241) or Mr Murphy (jmurphy@lcgs.tas.edu.au, 0497699758) if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

TJ Pieters

We respectfully acknowledge, with deep respect, the Palawa/Pakana people as the traditional owners of the land, sea, and waterways of Lutruwita (Tasmania) on which we work, rest and play. We pay our respects to elders past, present, and emerging and recognise their continued care for land, waterways, and community. We also acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
