To say I am proud of our Grade 5 students is an understatement. Their recent production of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr was simply magical. Every one of our 48 students transformed months of learning, rehearsal, and collaboration into something that truly belonged to them, a joyful celebration of their hard work, creativity, and courage.
Every student gave it their all. Singers found their voices, actors brought the whimsical world of Wonderland to life, dancers added flair and movement, and our backstage crew worked tirelessly to ensure costumes fit beautifully, hair and makeup were just right, and props came together seamlessly. Each contribution mattered, and every student played a vital role in creating the magic.
What inspired me most was the courage shown by those who were new to performing. For many, it was their first time on stage, stepping bravely beyond their comfort zones. Their willingness to give it a go, make mistakes, and grow from the experience was met with such encouragement and care from their peers. It truly became a safe, supportive space where everyone could shine.
The production was also a wonderful example of our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) in action. The PYP encourages students to be inquirers, thinkers, and communicators, and Alice in Wonderland Jr brought these attributes to life in such a meaningful way. Throughout the process, students explored ideas about identity, imagination, and perspective, connecting what they learn in the classroom with the real world.
They took ownership of their learning, worked collaboratively, solved problems creatively, and reflected on their growth every step of the way. This is what the PYP is all about: learning through experience, with purpose and joy.
The magic extended beyond the students too. Our parent community went above and beyond, from designing and sewing costumes to helping backstage and cheering in the audience. Their generosity and enthusiasm made such a difference, and we’re so grateful for their support.
“We’re not just acting or singing, we’re learning to be brave, to work together, and to make something amazing happen as a team.”
- Olivia Calvert, Queen of Hearts
By the final curtain, our Grade 5 students stood tall, not only as performers but as confident, capable learners who embody the spirit of the PYP. I couldn’t be prouder of what they achieved together.
