Celebrating 34 Years Of Service: Farewell To Nicholas Foster

20250325 Grammar HS Stock 42

After an extraordinary 34 years at Launceston Grammar, Nicholas Foster has concluded his remarkable journey with the School, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations of students, staff, and the wider Grammar community.

To mark this milestone, colleague and friend Darren Chilcott reflects on Nick’s extraordinary contribution to Grammar, his steady leadership, and the lasting influence he leaves behind.

Over more than three decades, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Nick Foster, a colleague, mentor, and friend whose impact on Launceston Grammar is hard to overstate. In that time, Nick has held an extraordinary range of roles, teaching English, History and PE; serving as Head of Boys’ Boarding; Head of Roff House; Deputy Headmaster; Head of Campus; Acting Headmaster; and most recently, Director of Grammar Enterprise. It’s safe to say he’s done (almost) everything at Grammar.

In each role, Nick brought the same steadfast commitment, insight, and warmth that defined his leadership. For many of us, his office became a place of calm counsel, a hub for conversation over soothing jazz music, a sounding board for challenges, or simply a space to share stories and laughter. His ability to listen deeply, to offer wisdom without judgment, and to make everyone feel heard has left a lasting impression on generations of staff.

Nick’s influence extended well beyond the staffroom. Students, past and present, speak of his compassion and genuine interest in their lives. Many have returned years later to express gratitude for his teaching, guidance, and encouragement. From the sports field to the classroom, Nick shaped young people in ways that reached far beyond academic learning, helping them grow into confident, kind, and thoughtful individuals.

His knowledge of the School’s history is unmatched. When prospective families toured the campus with him, they quickly sensed not only his encyclopedic understanding of Grammar but also his pride in its story and people.

Yet it is perhaps Nick’s affable nature and wise words that we will miss most. He had a way of grounding those around him, reminding us to keep perspective and to act with both care and courage. Grammar is richer for his presence, his steady leadership, his good humour, and his capacity to bring out the best in others.

Nick leaves Launceston Grammar with the gratitude, admiration, and affection of the entire community. His dedication, wisdom, and friendship have left an indelible mark, one that will continue to guide and inspire long after his departure.

As he begins his next chapter in a new educational setting we wish him every success. It feels fitting that he continues to work with young people, shaping lives with the same patience, generosity, and purpose that have defined his 34 remarkable years at Grammar.
