A Life of Service

When Michael Legge AM reflects on a lifetime of leadership and service, it is unlikely he would point to awards or titles as defining moments. 

Yet it is those very qualities of humility, generosity and an unwavering commitment to community, that have seen him named the recipient of Launceston Grammar's 2026 Peter Sculthorpe Alumnus of the Year Award.

This Award recognises Launceston Grammar alumni whose contributions have made a lasting impact on their profession, community and society. For Michael, that impact extends from the paddocks of Tasmania's Fingal Valley to humanitarian organisations operating across the globe.

Michael's connection to Launceston Grammar spans generations. A student at the School from 1968 - 1977 (Class of 1979), he remains a proud member of the alumni community, while his three children, Olivia (2010), Tom (2013) and Millicent (2016) also attended Grammar. Michael also served on the Launceston Grammar Board for 11 years, contributing his leadership and governance experience to the ongoing development of the School.

As owner of Hanleth, the Legge family property near Avoca, Michael has continued a farming legacy that spans generations. However, his influence reaches far beyond agriculture.

For more than three decades, Michael has been deeply involved with the Australian Red Cross. What began as volunteer service in St Marys during the 1980s evolved into a distinguished leadership career at state, national and international levels. In 2011, he became the first Tasmanian elected President of Australian Red Cross, serving for six years and helping guide one of Australia's most respected humanitarian organisations.

His work also extended to the international stage through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, where he contributed to strengthening governance and accountability across the Asia-Pacific region.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to humanitarian service, Michael was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2017.

While these achievements are significant, Michael's connection to Launceston Grammar is perhaps best understood through the thousands of students who have experienced Hanleth over the past two decades.

For 19 years, Michael has generously opened the property to Grammar's Grade 7 students, providing the setting for one of the most formative experiences of their school journey. Generations of students have built confidence, resilience and friendships while camping, exploring and challenging themselves in the unique environment that Hanleth provides.

It is a contribution that reflects Michael's enduring belief in the value of community, education and creating opportunities for young people to grow.

 Principal Dale Bennett said Michael's impact could be measured not only through his professional and humanitarian achievements, but also through the lives he has influenced closer to home.

The Peter Sculthorpe Alumnus of the Year Award honours members of the Launceston Grammar alumni community whose lives reflect leadership, service and a commitment to making a positive difference. Named after the celebrated Australian composer and Launceston Grammar alumnus Peter Sculthorpe AO OBE, the Award recognises those whose achievements inspire future generations.

Michael Legge's contribution to Tasmania, to humanitarian service and to the Launceston Grammar community embodies these values in every respect.

As the School celebrates its 180th year, it is fitting to recognise a person whose legacy is not defined by any single achievement, but by a lifetime spent serving others.
