Head of Senior Campus - Mr Nicholas Foster

It was a wonderful this week to welcome to the school Jacquie Bell. Jacquie spoke to our Grade 9 students about her journey running ultra-distance marathons on every continent of the world. More than this, however, Jacquie spoke about the power of  perseverance and how to overcome anxiety in order to become the best version of yourself. It was also wonderful to have Jacquie speak to our parents in the first parent seminar series for 2021. Early next term we will welcome David Gillespie who will speak about the teenage brain.

Today I am excited to  launch Schools TV.  This is not to be confused with Grammar TV,  which is produced by students in our media programme and placed on a YouTube channel. Schools TV is a resource for parents and staff to help support the wellbeing of young people. Each week new reports are released by experts in their field to  better help us  understand current research about wellbeing and how we can best support young people.

There are also several archived articles to help better inform us all.  The website is accessible here.

I’m also excited that this week students in Grade 8 to 12 completed a Flourish survey.  As I wrote in an earlier communication, Flourish provides an opportunity to explore wellbeing and help young people to proactively promote their own wellbeing. Our Pastoral Care Team will use the results from these surveys to help students set goals to achieve this. This is a very empowering programme and will help students in our care become active participants in their learning in partnership with their tutor. Programmes such as Flourish better enables us to do that.

Through professional learning, our staff are equipping themselves to better help support mental health in our community. Youth Mental Health First Aid accreditation is a 15-hour course that many staff have completed and more will complete in the first two days of term two.  The School has also been working with Dr David Moore to implement a restorative framework and respectful relationship focus within our Pastoral Care Programme. David is a world leader in this field and has spent time with all staff in exploring best practice in building a respectful culture. This involves students having a clear understanding of rights, but also the responsibilities that go with those rights.

Finally, as we reach the end of week 6, there are only three weeks to go in this term. For many of our rowers their season ends tomorrow at the Head of the River. For many other teams, results from tomorrow will determine if they progress onto finals or their season ends.  I wish all our athletes and coaches the best of luck. I would also like to sincerely thank the many volunteer coaches that make our programmes run. Without them we would not be able to offer all that we do. Week in and week out they put themselves out to support our students. Selflessly they toil to support our community.  On behalf of the School and the student body please accept our thanks. In a year that sees our three  areas of focus being perseverance, thankfulness and gentleness,  I can think of no better example than yours.  I’ll leave you with the thoughts of Rumi who wrote in the 1200’s:

“And still, after all this time, the Sun has never said to the Earth,‘You owe me.’ Look what happens with love like that. It lights up the sky.”

Thanks for being that light for our students.

Warm wishes,

Nick
Head of Senior Campus

A Message from the Registrar’s Office

If you have not yet enrolled your other child/ren at Launceston Grammar, I encourage you to do so as soon as possible as places do fill quite quickly.

Places for 2021 enrolments filled quite quickly last year and we had to waitlist a number of families so early enrolment, regardless of the year of entry is recommended.

Please note that we do allocate sibling and alumni priorities to each year group; and a family application for enrolment fee if enrolling more than one child at a time in recognition of your support and commitment to your child’s education at Launceston Grammar.

Please contact Carolyn Roney, Registrar or Bonnie Reeves, Assistant Registrar to learn more. Registrar@lcgs.tas.edu.au or 6336 6000

Grade 6 teacher, Helen Wilson has secured a place on the Bush Blitz Teachlive Stony Head 2021 Expedition.

The Bush Blitz TeachLive program sees primary and secondary teachers from across Australia join scientists in the field. The teachers help Australia’s top scientists document the plants and animals in the area, and potentially discover new species. From the field teachers teach ‘live’ back to their students via the dedicated Bush Blitz TeachLive website. Highlights and lesson plans are posted daily and students experience what is involved in scientific research as their teacher works first hand with industry professionals to demonstrate the skills of identifying, classifying and describing plant and animal specimens to the students.

Launceston Grammar’s Junior Campus is an IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) School, and as such, embraces authentic learning opportunities for our students. Having a staff member immersed in the environment and working with industry professionals provides a unique and powerful opportunity to learn first-hand the application of scientific techniques and to explore the study of place.

  • Why is it like it is?
  • What is our connection to it?
  • What questions and issues arise from the data?
  • What is our role as responsible citizens?

Our students will have the opportunity to: observe the project first-hand; design authentic questions; develop research skills; observe first-hand the role of a range of professionals in action; and witness the powerful collaboration of organisations working together towards a shared goal.

The Tasmania Police Career Development Program is aimed at Grade 12 students from around Tasmania who have a keen interest in becoming a Police Officer.

We are very excited to be able to run a production this year and this week we announced that auditions for Carry On will be held in Week 8.

As in previous years the production is open to students from Grades 9-12 but this year, due to COVID restrictions still in place, we have had to cap the number of cast members involved at 50. Whilst this is a change, we must still adhere to current social distancing rules, yet we feel very lucky to be able to put a show on this year after having to cancel last year’s production.

We still strongly encourage everyone who would like to audition to give it a go if they are keen to be involved but there is a chance some students may not be able to be part of the cast this time around. We shall also be giving priority to our senior students if we reach our maximum number. If students are unable to be included in the cast this time there are other opportunities to take part backstage, front of house or help on the costume team. There will, of course, also be more productions in the years to come.

If students are auditioning they should take note that rehearsals will begin after the Easter Holidays and will take place throughout Term Two. Most rehearsals take place on Fridays between 3.45pm and 5.30pm and Sundays from 10.00am to 12.30pm although there may be more rehearsals before the actual production week which will run from August 2 – 6 (Week Three, Term Three).

Janelle Scott, our wardrobe mistress is looking for interested parent and student volunteers to help source and create the amazing costume pieces that accompany the show. If you would be interested in helping out please email Janelle Scott at jscott@lcgs.tas.edu.au

We look forward to welcoming you all to the show when we open our doors to the audience on August 2, 2021.

Marianna Lebiedzinska- Frost
Director Carry On

House Chapels

In Chapel we have been preparing for and  looking forward to Easter. We have been finding that Jesus’ messages have been quite serious and challenging.

READING

From Mark Chapter 8
Jesus began to teach his disciples. He taught them that he must suffer many things. He taught them that the elders, chief priests and religious leaders would not accept him. He would be killed but after three days would rise from the dead.

34 Jesus called the crowd to him along with his disciples. He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must say no to their own needs. They must take up their cross and follow me. 35 Whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me and for the good news will save it. 36 What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their soul?”

PRAYERS
We give thanks for what’s good and what’s going well for us,
For everything we are happy with and enjoying.
We pray that we remember to look out for others.

We pray about things we are worried about or annoyed about,
about the things we need help with and need to sort out.

We pray for people in leadership and with power and influence that they would make wise decisions,
and do good for everyone and help out people where they can.

In the Lord’s name.  Amen.

Rev. Paul Grayston
Chaplain

It always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
