Dear Boarding Families

As we start our holidays we are using this time to freshen up a few boarding spaces. Our cleaners are also hard at work cleaning down surfaces and vacuuming floors. The last week of term saw students packing up their gear in order to de-clutter their living spaces. Some students will change rooms next term so this is a great opportunity to see what really needs to stay and what can go home.

This term we have celebrated some of our students leaving us, some new ones entering our boarding home as well as some birthday celebrations. The exam period is over and the old saying the “que is in the rack” applies to some of our students. I find it takes a few days to unwind from a term, so please be mindful if your son or daughter does not give you much in the first few days of being home, they are just getting over a long term.

My wife has her traditional list of jobs for me around the house as the break begins, so it was bitter-sweet to hear WA went into a snap 4-day lock-down. Although it has been 11 weeks since I last saw her in the flesh, I get a few extra days to do what most of our students will do and just relax before picking up the tools and punching through that long list.

Sleep better as a student

It is important to remember to not toss ‘sleep’ to the back of the list when it comes to priorities. For example, pulling an ‘all-nighter’ studying for final exams and filling yourself with energy drinks or coffee before the test and getting up at 9 am with three hours of sleep may not be the best approach. Or like a lot of our boarders driving home for the weekend before going out that night.

Having a ‘balanced life’ is so important however there are many reasons why students may not get enough sleep. The crazy study schedule, engaging in many social events, FOMO (fear of missing out), or noisy roommates or mates who don’t leave your room of an evening.

We also often don’t consider social media and Netflix (for example) as wasted time and the emotional impact that certain content can have on us. Not to mention, the freedom of not having an enforced curfew after going home for school holidays has a major appeal for many young students to stay up late, just because they can.

So why should we care?

There is some underlying truth behind the statement ‘your body is a temple’. Taking care of yourself and forming good habits is critical to one’s wellbeing. Getting enough sleep is proven to be beneficial to your health, such as strengthening the immune system and reducing the risk of heart disease.

For students here are some specific reasons.

  1. Sleep influences athletic performance
  2. Weight gain and sleep deprivation
  3. Sleep can affect your grade

So how do you get a good night’s sleep?

  1. Do not overload your schedule
  2. Revisit what you have on your plate and find a way to scale back
  3. Reschedule some non-urgent plans and have some time for rest

Too much noise? Try some noise cancelling gear.

  1. Earplugs and eye mask
  2. Apps are available for playing white noise or sleeping music (not an option for all boarders depending on grade group)
  3. Let roommates/ friends know when their activities or extended welcomes are too noisy for you to sleep

Look into your sleep hygiene.

  1. Try sticking to regular bedtimes (good in boarding as it’s part of our daily routines)
  2. Do your homework at a desk rather than in your bed
  3. Take some time to calm down (or even do some meditation) before going to slee

Our activities have wound up for the term and last weekend’s highlights saw the students and staff in for the weekend visit Citypark to see the snow monkeys with a stop to Swirlz for a milkshake then off to the cinema for a movie.

Feedback from all was it was a great day out. Looking to next term my aim is to get the calendar up and out to the community at the start of the term so you can see our planned events for weekend recreational activities. As always please let me know if you have any local knowledge of a great event the students can go to and we will look at making it happen.

The Long Weekend saw James, Jerry and Julia (our International students) visit Ben Lomond for the day, as well as cook up a Hot Pot for themselves. Next term we will hopefully get back up to Ben Lomond for some snow.

Still a work in progress however I am pleased to say students are now using the system we discussed to provide feedback on meals. Having the instant feedback allows conversations between all stakeholders to have buy in and improve the all-important boarders’ meals.

Just a reminder please see below our system for feedback and please continue to encourage your child to use it. Our current system if students/ staff aren’t happy with a particular meal is that we need instant feedback, which can be in the form of:

  • the comments book in the dining hall
  • talking to catering staff in the kitchen for that shift
  • boarding staff on hand each day and at each meal and finally
  • the duty report which gets entered each night from the staff on duty in each house.

We look forward to working with you on this and value your assistance and feedback.

We have flipped a new space between the boys boarding house. It looks like a Melbourne laneway and now with some added touches and a Weber Q, we have a Friday Night Pizza Space. If you get a chance when you are in, check it out! We are still looking for a name for this space, the breezeway, laneway have all been taken. One of the suggestions is the ‘Bunka’ after bunkhouse which was a name for a boarding house back in the day. Any creative suggestions are welcomed.

The boys house has also had some work done to it around the bedroom spaces. We have created two new spaces for boys to sleep in and blocked off half of one of the big rooms with a wall and door. We could see a need to modify the size of the space to make it more useable and improve the living space for our boarders.

The Headmaster, Mr Ford has approved new mattresses to be given to all boarders for next term. This is mentioned as part of the Sleep better as a student article featured previously in this newsletter.

Having stayed at Poimena overnight, my wife reminded me about the need to freshen up this space. I am pleased to say we have purchased some new linen and towels which should have you waking up fresh from a good night’s sleep. A reminder it is available for 1 to 2 night stays and please let me know if you would like to book the space.

A Kind Gesture

After having her as a feature in our last newsletter, I was saddened by the loss of Bella my beautiful boarder collie a few weeks back. Not long after sending out the newsletter, Bella had been playing on the oval chasing a tennis ball at night with me, then she found her way into the boarding house with the help of Maya and Jay, then as I was walking her home at night she took off chasing the paddy melons around the bush we have near the boarding house. I went out to find her in the wild weather and she had found the bottom highway where a car hit and killed her. I buried her in the backyard with a headtorch.

The kids like me were very very upset when word got around about what had happened so I was touched when David our youngest boarder went and made a big card with help from his mum Jenny and had all the boarders sign it. Thank you, it was a kind gesture and much appreciated by myself and my family.

As I wrote in the last newsletter, we are invested at Launceston Grammar to ensure our staff are adequately qualified to supervise your child/ren in our care. We were booked in for ABSA to run a two-day workshop on Duty of Care, however due to COVID break outs over the last few weeks, Richard Stokes from ABSA was refused entry into Tasmania having been in NSW running workshops. This will now be pushed back to next term. On a positive note Head of Sport, Adrian Finch has organised a Bronze Medallion re-qualification course for boarding staff at the start of next term. This will see more of our boarding staff qualified to supervise boarders at the pool. We also have had some more staff now with their PPV licence to assist in the transport needs of some of our boarders.

There is strong growth in this area, and I am pleased staff are getting onboard with upskilling themselves as part of their commitment to providing the best duty of care for your child.

At Launceston Grammar we are committed to ensuring our staff are adequately trained to ensure we can conduct duty of care in the supervision of adolescents because as we all know it can be onerous and demanding of residential staff as it is of parents.
