It has been a wonderful few months at Launceston Grammar and it has been very encouraging hearing of the successes of many of our alumni as well as rejoicing in the successes of our current students.

Our Senior Boys and Girls First XI Soccer teams represented the School with distinction against the much larger Guilford Young College in Hobart in the recent state final. Our Senior Girls were seeking their 5th premiership in a row. In a nail-biting game that went into extra time, and was finally decided by a penalty kick off the girls were narrowly defeated. Whilst I, like many of us, enjoy winning it filled me with great pride to see the humility with which our girls accepted defeat and congratulated their opponents. As one of the girls commented to me afterwards, “we will get them next year!”

Following on from this match our Senior Boys also tackled Guilford Young College which fielded a team containing many highly credentialled state league players. In an incredible game which also went into overtime, our boys came away with the victory. It was heartening to see the girls celebrating on the field with our boys as they won the State Final for the first time in over 22 years ending a run of 4 in a row for Guilford Young and bringing the trophy back to Launceston Grammar.

We recently held the Blessing of the Fleet at the School which is the traditional commencement of the rowing season. We were joined by Alexandra Viney (class of 2010) who helped christen the boat named in her honour. Alexandra was an outstanding rower as a student achieving success with our Senior VIII at the Head of the River and was poised to achieve more success in her rowing post School. This was dealt a blow as Alexandra was in a horrific accident which saw her severely injured and she did not step back into a boat for many years. Alex told the story of the hardships faced when finally getting back into a boat and the joy and camaraderie that she found rowing with others. Alex went on to row at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games and recently represented Australia at the World Championship bringing home a silver medal. Alex’s inspirational message to the students demonstrated her courage, her humility, and her grit. We feel privileged to have a boat named in her honour. This follows on from the great success of Henry Youl (Class of 2009) at the World Championship. Earlier this year a boat was also named after him to acknowledge his successes and contribution to rowing. It is wonderful that our students can sit in a boat bearing the name of students who not so many years ago rowed out of the same shed where they are now learning their craft.

We were excited the hear the news of Mr Ross Youngman who successfully swam the English Channel raising in excess of $165,000 for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. At the time of writing Ross is preparing to swim in a marathon around Manhattan Island.

Earlier this term some of our students joined Indira Naidoo at a breakfast during the Tamar Valley Writers Festival and were fortunate to hear her speak. Her recent book The Space Between the Stars is both poignant and beautiful.

One of the great strengths of Grammar is, and always has been, its community and the lessons that we can learn from those that have gone before us to help inspire and encourage us to do great things in the service of others, and in challenging ourselves. I recently heard that a person’s desire to reach should always exceed their grasp as they strive to reach further than they could possibly dream. The stories of our alumni encourage our students and very soon as our Grade 12’s finish their final exams, they too will start their journey as alumni of the School whilst also leaving their legacy for students to inspire those coming behind. The stories of the four alumni that I have mentioned today demonstrate the determination, grit, sense of service to the community and compassion that I know we hope to instil in our current students. To have such inspirational alumni to follow is truly inspiring.

As we move towards the end of 2022, I look forward to 2023 which sees two significant milestones in the life of the School. 2023 will mark 40 years since Broadland House Church of England Girls Grammar School amalgamated with Launceston Church Grammar School to become the School it is today, and 100 years since the campus at Mowbray was established. We will be celebrating these milestones in 2023 and will keep you informed.

Warm regards

Nicholas Foster

We have recently celebrated our Lyttleton Street Chapter Lunch at the Junior Campus.

Broadland House School moved to this present site in the summer of 1914 and today of all the original buildings in this section of Lyttleton Street No 10 is the only one remaining. We thank the Grammar School for their continued support of this building.  John Faulkner spoke to the Old Girls about the work that has been done on the restoration of our old administration building.

To the 30 new inductees from 1972, this was their first time back at their old school.  The ladies found many changes to the school grounds and buildings and many memories to share with each other. The tour by Mrs Sheona Carter, Head of the Junior Campus, was a delight for the past students, they found the learning and teaching so different to their days at the school.

We thank the Acting Headmaster Mr Nicholas Foster and Captain and Vice Captain Grace Robertson and Lily Redburn for their attendance at the luncheon.

Old Girls from the North travelled to Hobart on Wednesday 12th October to attend the Southern Luncheon where they enjoyed the opportunity to talk with former students and remember their days spent at Broadland.

In early September, alumna and 2017 Peter Sculthorpe Alumnus Award Recipient, Indira Naidoo returned to Launceston for a gala lunch where she gave a key address about her latest book, The Space Between the Stars. In this book, she writes about the tragic loss of her younger sister, the magical power of nature to heal, and shares her wonderful school-age memories growing up in Tasmania.

A selection of current Launceston Grammar students and our Head of Learning Hub Mrs Cherrilyn Parker joined Indira for the event. We are thrilled to share these images of the selected students who participated in the Tamar Valley Writers Festival luncheon.

“Our lovely afternoon with Indira Naidoo. She is so inspiring and my heart is so full of gratitude. Thank you for allowing this opportunity to transpire. Lily, Arden, Mrs Parker, Mrs Carter and myself had a very yummy lunch and an inspiring afternoon. ” – Ashlyn Mayes Grade 12.

Wall of Fame 2022

This August, the Drama and Dance Department held its annual Wall of Fame night. This is an event where performing arts alumni are invited back to the school to share how their experiences in the arts have impacted their lives and careers. We have alumni represented who moved into a wide range of careers, some continuing on within the theatre and performance industries and some moving into very different fields.

This year’s inductee was Lucy Barbour (Class of 2003) who is a renowned reporter for ABC’s Landline and has had a wide-ranging and interesting career in journalism. The evening kicked off with a welcome provided by Nicholas Foster to the Drama students and parents who attended and then Lou Peters, who taught Lucy Drama in Grade 12, introduced her. Unfortunately Lucy could not be with us in person but she did record a video which was played on the night. This included fond recollections of her time at Grammar and the impact of the decision she made in swapping from Physical Science to Drama in Year 11. She then went on to detail how that led her into journalism and the importance of following your gut instinct with some of those important choices.

The students present were inspired by her words and the message that studying the performing arts can have a deep and lasting impact on whatever you might then choose to pursue in later life. The evening then moved into the Drama rooms where the audience was treated to two dance pieces, one by Grade 8 students and a solo piece by dance captain Mia Ainslie, both of which were very moving and engaging. Edie Burns then performed a monologue from ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’ to showcase some of the work being done in the Drama department.

The evening was then rounded off with the Drama Captains Sarah Scott and Jade Freeman and Dance Captain Mia Ainslie officially unveiling Lucy Barbour’s picture and bio which will hang above the door to TR3 until next year’s Wall of Fame.

A lovely night was had by all in attendance and it was wonderful to see the great impact that the performing arts can continue to have even long past school days. Many thanks to Lou Peters, Ingrid Reynolds and the Marketing Team for putting together this event and we invite you to come and view the Wall of Fame next time you drop by the Drama Department.

Thirty Broadland House  Old Girls gathered at the Royal Tasmanian Yacht Club for lunch. As well as welcoming the Acting Headmaster and Mrs Foster, we welcomed several northern members which was great to have them with the Southerners! The volume of noise in the room was evidence of the discussions and memories which were going on! There were some copied documents about Broadland and Old Girls which created a lot of interest. Just the mention of the name of a teacher every now and then created quite a reaction! A recording of a message from Miss Rooney when she retired rekindled more memories. Staff in the bar beyond us commented on hearing our rendition of the school song!! It never fades.
