Celebrating Launceston Church Grammar School’s 175th Anniversary has been very exciting with a number of key events featuring so far.

Broadland House Old Girls invited the new Head of Junior Campus, Mrs Sheona Carter to afternoon tea and to view the display cases in Café 1846, which look amazing filled with former school uniforms and other memorabilia.

This week the Lawrence family visited the School to look over the uniforms and photos of their Grandfather and Uncle who both attended the Elizabeth Street school. A wonderful donation was received of two boaters, which were worn by the boys – also boarders at the School in 1892.

We all came together this week to celebrate Founders Day at St John’s Church. It is fitting to note that students from both Launceston Grammar and Broadland have attended this church over many years.

Also, this week the Archives volunteers had the opportunity to look over the refurbishing to date of the Cricket Pavilion, a wonderful new space to display some of the many cricket photos from past School days.

SAVE THE DATE: The opening of the refurbished Cricket Pavilion on Friday 15 October. More details to follow.

This week the School celebrated the 175-year-old birthday with an all-school service, a photograph on the School oval, cake cutting and cupcakes and service at St John’s. Headmaster, Richard Ford says the School is thrilled to be celebrating our 175th this year.

“In our first year we taught Latin and Greek, today we teach Mandarin and aviation,” says Richard. “As the oldest continually running independent school in Australia, this is a significant milestone and opportunity for the School community to honour our past, celebrate who we are today and imagine together who we will become.”

It was pleasing to see a good turnout for our regular Old Lads lunch at Dynasty on Wednesday 2 June when the weather has not been overly kind as winter starts to set in with morning frost and chilling winds.

Joined by Headmaster Richard Ford the group were reminded of some of the forthcoming events in celebration of the 175-year anniversary. Richard suggested that those who would like a tour of the new Aviation space at the Senior Campus would be very welcomed and arrangements could be made late morning on the day of our next luncheon scheduled for September. It was also pleasing to hear of the many celebratory events planned for the remainder of the year. Details are provided in this newsletter. This week’s Founders Day Service at St John’s Church was a wonderful occasion.

At the Old Lads lunch, there was the usual camaraderie with much of the conversation about those who we remember well and those who are sadly no longer with us. We welcomed Charles Jones (alumnus, 1949) who I caught up with at the Elizabeth Street Chapter Luncheon earlier this year and hope to see him as a regular at our lunches. There were several apologies which included Nigel Bailey (Board Chair), Michael Nolan, Peter Clemons, Wally Lyon, Ian Richards, Alan Beecroft, Graham Nott, Mark Brown, Ben Clark, and John Brett.

Our next lunch is scheduled for early September at Dynasty. Perhaps a little warmer with spring air following a cold winter. If you would like to attend, please let me know and I will add your email to our growing list.

We respectfully acknowledge, with deep respect, the Palawa/Pakana people as the traditional owners of the land, sea, and waterways of Lutruwita (Tasmania) on which we work, rest and play. We pay our respects to elders past, present, and emerging and recognise their continued care for land, waterways, and community. We also acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
